Anima
Installation. 300 pom poms, anglepoise and stool.
Anima, 2005, exhibition and exchange between artists from g39 and B312, Montreal, Canada.
This work was made for B312, Montreal, to documentation seen of the gallery space and its layout - especially the radiator and the recess that surrounded it. The building has a history as a site for the fur trade. The 'fluffy' balls of black yarn look as though they could have been spawned within the hidden spaces of the building and now creep out, seeking.
Their relationship to the light source also brings an element of story and anima. the light illuminates them, they are drawn to it, the light 'appears surprised' and 'disconcerted' by these dense balls of matter. There is a sense of unease.
The making of this series of pom poms was inspired by a desire to make something low craft and to grant them a gravity by placing them in the domain of fine art. The act of binding and setting free is also key to this work.
