Profile: Philippa Lawrence
The work of Philippa Lawrence usually consists of site-specific installations or collections of objects in response to place. Work is informed by a desire to learn about and understand the material world, to meet people through her research and practice and to make a real and lasting connection to both people and place. Ideas often require the acquisition of a new set of skills or knowledge such as gilding or working with glass.
Work honours the simple elements that constitute our everyday experience and is both beguiling and celebratory. The commonplace and overlooked is reinterpreted and through intervention its status is elevated. A graduate from the Royal College of Art in fine Art Printmaking she is interested in the multiple, either repeating an action or re-employing a seemingly insignificant object in an exploration and study of difference. Pattern and play are both pertinent; pattern in nature and in our daily lives - the pattern of living.
She has an eye for life's details and her work illustrates an evident delight in the 'stuff' that surrounds us.
